Great stand up comedy looks like it’s coming off the top of your head. Great improvisational comedy is exactly that…hilarious and totally created in the moment. I personally love the satisfaction of writing my own material and preparing a set for a show. Then, acting as my own writer, producer, director, actor on stage, it feels great to deliver my act full of things I find funny to an audience and then hearing the audience’s laughter in response. It’s a lot of fun and I don’t take it for granted. I’ve studied improv with The Second City and improvising with a group of other actors and coming up with hilarious scenes in the moment is both a challenge and a thrill as well. Stand up and improv are such amazing art forms in and of themselves, for much different reasons. My friend and fellow comedian, ChadEO, created a way to combine stand up and improv where a comedian performs and then afterwards, an improv troupe uses the comedian’s act as the suggestion they use to create. Together, we developed it into a television format and produced a pilot presentation called Mexican Tap Water. We shot it at Broadway Comedy Club in NYC and the comedian you see in it is Moody McCarthy and the improv players include some of the best improv talent NYC has to offer including actors Matt Higgins and Ali Reza. My favorite part however, is the narrator. Listen to the voiceover. I wanted a little authenticity to add to the script so when it came time to record the VO, I went to a local bodega and asked if we could borrow one of their dishwashers for a TV pilot. People find TV opportunities hard to resist. They agreed to let us take one of their dishwashers if we gave him $20. Deal. He came back to the voiceover booth and read his lines. And by ‘read his lines’ I mean he said his lines as I fed him his lines word by word and he’d repeat since his English isn’t very good. We then took the words he said and pieced it together in post. Network execs, this show is still available for you to pick up and put ON THE AIR. So do it. Mexican Tap Water…mmm, bueno!
